The silhouette-recovery example shows regional intelligence doing its job: faces lift from near-black into recognizable warmth while the sunset window behind holds its color rather than blooming white. Global brightening would have moved both directions equally, ruining the background to save the subjects — adaptive correction is what lets one photo have two different exposure destinies at once.

What's the difference between underexposure and backlighting?
Underexposure means the whole frame got too little light — everything lifts together when corrected. Backlighting means the camera exposed correctly for the bright background while your subject fell into shadow — correction must lift the shadow region selectively to avoid nuking the background.
Can I prevent this next time I take a photo?
Mostly yes: tap your subject on the screen to force focus-and-exposure there (counters backlighting), avoid shooting into light sources (rotation beats correction), and in dim rooms steady the phone — motion plus darkness compounds both problems.
Does this work on night photos with visible light sources?
Yes — street lamps and neon give recovery anchor points, making these scenes respond better than fully black frames. True no-light captures stay limited by what the sensor caught.
Will brightening add noise?
Amplification reveals noise that was already recorded — our pipeline suppresses it during the lift automatically. Extremely dark frames still yield grainier results than moderately dark ones; physics sets the floor honestly.
