Handle wet prints correctly first

Soaked photos fuse as they dry; peeling tears emulsion off both. If already fused past gentle separation, digitize as-is — repair handles some of it.
Tide-lines, washed out instead
Tide-line staining responds well because mineral deposits sit atop the emulsion rather than within it — the example above shows brown waviness lifting completely while the photograph underneath emerges intact. Emulsion cracking tells a different story honestly: fine fracture networks improve substantially but retain faint texture at print size, the visible residue of physical loss no algorithm can truthfully erase.
Long-term storage advice follows directly from damage mechanics: albums stored vertically in interior rooms away from exterior walls experience the humidity swings that drive water damage down dramatically. Silica gel packets cost almost nothing and measurably stabilize cupboard microclimates. Prevention here is genuinely cheaper than the best restoration, which remains true of nearly everything involving water.

Frequently asked questions
Can this remove water stains completely?
Surface staining and tide-line discoloration largely yes — they are coloration the model can neutralize. Where water physically lifted or cracked the emulsion layer, texture loss remains; we reconstruct plausibly from surroundings but full invisibility isn't promised.
Does it work on mold-damaged photos too?
Mold staining often corrects similarly to water stains. Active mold should never be scanned indoors without containment — health first; freeze or dry such prints properly before digitizing anything.
Should I try to dry the photo first?
Air-dry slowly face-up if stuck to others don't peel apart. Never iron or hair-dry prints — heat warps and cracks emulsion irreversibly, converting recoverable staining into permanent structural damage. If multiple prints have fused into a block, freeze them first — frozen emulsion sometimes separates cleanly at the ice layer, while room-temperature peeling tears fibers from both surfaces irreversibly.
Can severe water damage be fully restored?
